Start An Online Business With A Website

Start an Online Business with a Website in 4 easy steps header with image of tablet showing graphs

You can start your online business by using social sites but there are some things about doing it that way that can cause you to wake up in the middle of the night in cold sweats.

Learning how to start an online business with a website will provide you with full control over your content compared to using social platforms that don't own any of their content but rely on yours to create huge profits in their pockets.

I will explain in more detail why I don't suggest running your online business on platforms that don't own content and you will learn all of the advantages of having your own website.

As a bonus, I will show you how easy it is to create and manage your own website(s).

Affiliate marketing is a form of online business that thrives by having a website so you can brand yourself as a trusted authority in your field.

Why Say"No" To Social Media Platforms

It is important to note that I love social platforms just not in the same way as having an online business website.

I can hear you thinking now.

Ok, Paul, make up your mind will ya! Do you like them or not?

I do like them for interacting with my audience but I would not rely on them as my sole platform to put all of my online business content.

Here Are 4 Reasons I Say, "Don't Do it!"

Say "No" to putting all of your content on social Media Platforms

1

You Have No Control

You are at the mercy of the social platform rules and regulations. They can change their rules and regulations at any time, without notice. That can have a huge impact on your business if the changes are not in your favor. You can lose your whole following overnight.

2

They Can End At Anytime

All of your content and years of hard work can disappear in a flash.

Some good examples are Vine and Google+. I was starting to have a strong following when they decided they were shutting G+ down (April 2019).

3

You Are Bringing Traffic To Them

This is a little less concerning as it is sort of a win-win situation. As you add content to their platforms you are essentially bringing traffic to their website so people can see and click on their ads, NOT YOURS. This is ok as they are letting you use their platform for free so I can understand that they should be allowed to cash in on your traffic but wouldn't you rather bring traffic to your site and you CASH IN instead?

4

Branding Limitations

You can create a brand for yourself within these platforms but the extent at which you can do so is dependent on how much you are allowed to customize your pages. Again, you are at the mercy of the constraints within the platform.

Why Say"YES" To Building Your Own Website

The quick reason I suggest creating your own website is so that you can have as much control of your online business as possible.

Sure there are still things that are not completely under your control such as your web-hosting site going down for a few seconds but having your own website is still the ultimate means of having control over your business.

You can still use social connections, it's actually encouraged that you do.

You're probably thinking again, "Paul didn't you just list 4 reasons to say no to social media platforms?"

Well, I did say no to putting all of your content on those platforms but you can certainly share some of your content or link to your website content from those platforms.

Here are 4 Reasons I say, "Do It!"

Create Your Own Website

1

You Have Full Control

Creating a website will allow you full control over your online business. You have full flexibility and input on how you want your website, your brand to look like. This could be the single most important reason to have a website.

2

Create Multiple Income Streams

Having your own website will allow you to create multiple income streams such as affiliate marketing, ad revenue, selling your digital products, and creating your own membership site. Instead of sending traffic and income to social platforms you can the traffic to your own website and create a lucrative income for yourself.

3

Anchor Your Marketing Strategy

Your website can be the focal point for your online business marketing strategy. Instead of having all of your content on other platforms that you don't own, having your own website you can have links on those social sites that will drive traffic to your website, your ads, your products.

4

It's Cool

I had to put that in there. It is cool to have your own website, your unique online business where people from around the world come to see what you have to say. Your website, with a unique brand, will continue to grow and evolve like any long term business. It's kinda like real estate. When your website is new, it's almost the same as buying some land far outside of a city where it is not seen by many people and the value is low. With time and experience, your website starts to gain some recognition, slowly your site becomes part of the city and you get lots of traffic.

It's really cool to see how a website evolves.

I hope those quick and easy descriptions have convinced you that it is better to start your business with the use of a website. Then share snippets of your content to social sites that link back to your website which in turn creates increased traffic and potential income.

How To Create A Website

This is actually one of the easiest parts to building your online business.

I will break it down into 4-steps. (I think I see a trend here?)

1

Register A Domain

If you already have a business name, cool! If you don't and want to get into affiliate marketing then you will need to decide what niche topic you want to use. It is best to choose a subject that you are passionate about. You can learn all about niche ideas on one of my other blog posts here. Once you have chosen a niche and name you want to use you'll have to register your domain name. I wrote all about choosing a domain name here.

You can register a FREE domain name right now by typing it in the tool below.

2

Host Your Website

Now that you've registered your domain name you will need a place to host your website. Some people do this from their advanced home computers but 99% of people use hosting platforms.

One thing to consider when choosing a hosting site is the price, of course, but it's also important to see what you get with that price.

I've been in the online business for a few years already and the best hosting site that I can recommend is called Wealthy Affiliate.

They not only provide web-hosting but also provide loads of training, support, and tools needed to run a successful online affiliate business.

3

Build Your Website

Alright, so your domain is registered and now you have a place to host it. All that is left is to build your website. You can use platforms that have built-in website builders but there again you can lose a good amount of freedom with your website designs. The website builder that most affiliate marketers will use is called WordPress.

That again is where Wealthy Affiliate has you covered. If all of this information still appears too vague then Wealthy Affiliate will take you step-by-step through the process with videos and task-oriented training modules.

They also use WordPress where you can have your website up and running within 60 seconds from signing in. WordPress is an open source platform that offers you a full range of design flexibility with thousands of free plugins for website customization. They also have thousands of free themes already designed for you.

Or you can purchase premium themes from places like WpEngine or StudioPress.

4

Add Content To Your Website

With your website now built it is time to add content. If you have chosen your niche you are passionate about then this part will be easy. All you have to do is write blog posts and create videos about your subject. You will use a keyword research tool that will help you get your articles on the first page of search engines. You guessed it, Wealthy Affiliate also provides that keyword research tool as part of the web-hosting service.

Conclusion

Social platforms are amazing but please don't rely solely on them to hold are your content. If you still don't plan to have a website at least make sure that you use several platforms to ensure you don't lose all your following should one close or change their rules.

I hope that the information provided will help you understand why I feel it is important to learn how to start an online business with a website.

Believe me when I say that building your website is quite easy.

Sure there is a learning curve to building a website if you've never done it before.

Remember, if I can do it so can you!

I only made it this far because of the training at Wealthy Affiliate

There are other great platforms out there that can help you and the second best place I can recommend is Income School where they provide realistic training and expectations.

Have you ever created a website before?

If you did, on what platform did you build it on?

Please leave your answers below or if you have a comment I would love to hear from you.

I reply to everyone.

Cheers

I like this review topic in particular as I’ve been thinking about getting a standard website, a website I can have full control over unlike the social sites around. But I don’t really know how to go about it, would it be easier for me to create the site myself? Or would I require an expert to do so? I would like to own a website that I can use for a nice online business. Cheers.

You definitely want to build your own website. No need for an expert to build one for you and hold you hostage where you have to pay every time you want to make a change or update. You can all the step-by-step training at Wealthy Affiliate, Income School or any other platform that will teach you how to build your website.

Once you register your domain name and build your website you are the owner of that site. If your site does well you can always sell it later on, just like real estate.

Online business will not be completed without having a strong and secured website for your business and this can make you succeed and have nothing to regret in the future. This makes me feel that my website or business is securely secured. The importance of websites can not be neglected in online business.

I do feel that having your own website as the core of your online affiliate marketing business is the only way you can secure your content and followers from being lost. Using other people’s platforms like Facebook or Youtube is putting the faith of your business in their hands. You certainly want to use social media to enhance the reach of your business but I do not recommend putting all of your business content on their sites.

Love the article, Paul. This article breaks down the features of Wealthy Affiliate in easy step by step instructions that are bite-size and easy to follow. I have seen websites that just keeps going on and on about one topic. Gets confusing with too many words. I also like how you gave reasons not to use Social media. This is very informative. I use Wealthy Affiliate also and one thing about this platform that I have never seen anywhere else is the amazing community of members to talk to and learn from such as yourself. I learn new things every day. Thank you for the post

Happy to have been of assistance. Just to be clear about not using social media. I still believe that social media is an important part of affiliate marketing or any other online marketing business. I just don’t believe in people building their whole business on social media platforms without having their own websites.

Social media is a great resource for free traffic to your website but not a platform you want to entrust your whole business.

Hello Paul,

It’s always ideal to start an online business with a website. I definitely agree with you, social media can be volatile and you’re really at the mercy of the owners. And really, you only succeed in driving traffic to these social media sites and making them more successful.

However, it should also be noted, that social media is very important to promote blogs and online businesses. I for one love to use social media networks to share my blog post, and I get traffic from social media.

Excellent plan! Another great thing about sharing the content on your topics on social media is that it also ranks in the SERPs. Often when I’m testing I will see some of my shared content to social media on the SERPS?. So it is another method of SEO for your website as well.

Thank for sharing with us the informative and educative article. Online business cannot come into existence without a website to carry out the operation. It’s the only access to create a mutual relationship with followers, market products. It is better off than using social media or another person’s page. I am currently a member of Wealthy Affiliate. Soon am building my site to start my own business. Thanks, buddy, for sharing this.

Having a website is an integral part of building your affiliate marketing brand. Your audience needs to be able to identify your brand back to your website for credibility and authenticity.

Hi Paul, I cannot agree more. I also think that we should only utilize social platforms as a lead to our website, such as having the right hashtags etc. Having a legitimate website will give you the credibility and will gain your customer trust. Plus building a website nowadays is so easy, no need for writing codes. Just one click of choosing your theme and you can have an amazing website 🙂 I am not tech savvy either so if I can do it anyone can do as well. Thank you for sharing your opinion on social media 🙂

Exactly! Social media sites are amazing. They can reach so many people that may not otherwise search your topic in search engines. We really need to use all sources to optimize the traffic to our affiliate marketing websites.

Hi Paul, I liked your article and agree with you 100%, we definitely need our own website for online business. Of course, there are some people, who, for the sake of saving money end up following the cheap path. But we must realize that our business will grow to the extent we grow in our integrity.

I get to read your article at the right time, as my website is 1 month old. I’m developing content and at the same time facing an enormous challenge in writing new content every time. Hopefully, I’ll get through it soon. When you started off with your first website, how did you overcome this challenge? How long you took to learn pro-level blogging?

Thank you for sharing this post. This gives to newbie a good insight on working on their website. Also, thanks for suggesting your trustworthy platform for website building. It’s awesome indeed.

I still don’t consider myself a pro-level writer but it has become much easier compared to when I started that is for sure. I would say it took me a good 3 to 6 months to start feeling like I can actually write blogs that people wanted to read. Now I use the chunk methodology to writing blogs and it has really helped me avoid writer’s block or fear to start writing a blog post.

Now Before I start writing anything I create a list of blog posts I want to write for my website.

I make a list of at least 30 topics. 10 of which that would be considered pillar which are long 4000-5000+ word posts that explain various aspects of my niche subject. Then another 10 staple posts which are in the 2000-3000+ range that are generally the ‘X best of” type of posts and the other 10 are shorter 1500-2000+ in length posts that answer a specific question like “How to write a Blog Post-Fast!” Do all your keyword research and find authority links you want at this stage. All this should take you 1 day.

Having the list really helps as I’m not looking at my screen for 30 minutes every day wondering what I’m going to write about and I can now write 1 blog per 1 to 2 days on average in the evening as I work full-time during the day.

    Cheers

Hi Paul,

Thank you for this comprehensive guide on how to start an online business with a website. You have clearly broken down the process into 4 easy steps to follow.

FYI, I have also built my website with Wealthy Affiliate, but l see you do recommend Income School which I have little knowledge about their Project 24 where you can build an authority niche website within 24 months. But l prefer WA because it’s an All-In-One platform that provides all the features (training and tools) you will ever need to succeed.

Anyhow, l will take a closer look at Income School later on.

Once again, anyone who read this article would now know how to start an online business with a website.

Thank you.

Hi, Paul and thanks for this informative post.

You talk about the reasons for not putting all your content on social platforms and I would agree.  I have been taught through WA that just a little snippet with a link to your content is enough because the end result is you want to drive traffic to your website.  And it works.

I have a question.  No one thinks Facebook is going to go anywhere soon.  Is it possible to do Affiliate marketing on social media without a website?  If it is I would think it would mean more work.  Seems better, to me, to use it to direct traffic to a website and then hope they click through and purchase.

I like the idea of being in control of my own content and how my website looks.  I wouldn’t want to try and do business the other way and someone else has all the power and with the flick of a switch and it’s gone.

I am so glad that I found Wealthy Affiliate when I was searching for ways to make money online.  I truly believe they have saved me many a headache since I became a member.  They really do have it all, everything one needs to be successful.

Websites, hosting, security, site help, an amazing community there 24/7/365 to help get us through the hard stuff.  Anyone can do this if they follow the steps.

I am going to do this because I see others are.

See you at the top,

Wayne

    Hey Wayne,

You can certainly run your online business using social media only but then you will be relying on those platforms to not change the rules or decide to close down. We have seen many people lose years of work with Vines and now Google+ will be shutting down on April 2.

It can happen to any one of the other social media platforms as well.

They may change some rules on what can be on their platform and decide to not allow your content to be used anymore.

That is the reason I use websites as the foundation of my business then leverage those websites with links and interaction from social media platforms.

I am happy to hear you found Wealthy Affiliateand I’m sure we will cross paths there during our online adventures.

    Cheers
