How Long Does Affiliate Marketing Take

How Long Does Affiliate Marketing Take to make money with girl angry towards laptop

So, you're wondering how long does affiliate marketing take to make money?

You may not like my answer!

It can take you a minimum of around 6 months to start seeing enough traffic sent to your website from search engines like Google even if you have the best affiliate marketing plan set up and writing 3 to 4 blogs a week. It can take more than another 6 months before you see any type of income success.

This is the spot where you would expect me to start telling you about how you don't need to wait that long by using some "secret sauce" or that I know of some "hidden algorithms" that I can tell you about for the cheap price of $$$.

That won't be happening here as the truth is, there are no secrets to success in affiliate marketing and if you come across some site that is trying to tell there is...I suggest you run to the hills!

If you've seen or heard about wealthy affiliate marketers, it is likely they already put in the hard work up front, probably over a year or two ago, so they can reap the rewards now.

The problem with many new affiliate marketers is that they quit too soon.

I see so many that quit around the 3-month point. They are all keen in the first month but then by the second month they start losing steam.

They still write content but at a lower frequency and shorter blog posts, then by month three, they don't see any results so they start questioning if they should stop before they put too much time into their website.

Then they quit!

Why So Long

I have to say there are 3 main reasons it takes time for an affiliate marketer to get enough traffic to their site.

  1. Trust
  2. Content
  3. Engagement

1-Trust

As I mentioned in the introduction, many new affiliate marketers or niche sites only last 3 to 4 months on average.

Could you imagine if the search engines started sending people to sites that are just starting out and have little information on them?

Only to see those new sites end up being abandoned or removed?

Search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo try to give the user the best answer, the best experience they possibly can by sending people only to sites that have earned their trust.

One way that the search engines gauge if you are trustworthy is by seeing if you are going to stick around longer than the average affiliate marketer.

Once they see that you appear to be sticking around long enough they look at your content.

2-Content

Again to ensure they are giving the user the best experience they check out your content to see if it helps the person find what they are looking for.

If they see that people go to your site but quickly leave or hit the back button they assume they sent those people to the wrong place and will likely not send them there anymore for that particular search query.

That is why it is important to have good content that is helpful and engaging.

3-Engagement

When you do have visitors that stay for a bit on your website the search engines want to see what type of engagement there is on your website.

Are people leaving comments? Are you replying to comments? Are people sharing your blog posts on social media platforms like Facebook? Are people coming to your site from social media sites?

They want to see if your website is becoming, of sorts, a virtual community, a hub of activity where there is some type of buzz going on that people can't help but gather around to get a closer look.

Only once you have successfully answered the search engine's criteria of trust, content, and engagement that you can expect to see traffic directed to your website.

It is important to note that there is no guarantee that you will see that traffic come to your site in 6 to 12 months as there are other factors to consider.

What You Should Consider

What should you consider when starting out as an affiliate marketer?

What else does it take, other than the time to earn the trust, the time it takes to write good and helpful content, and the time to get enough engagement on your website?

You also need to consider search engine optimization (SEO) and choosing the appropriate niche that is not too competitive.

Affiliate marketing is a competitive business with millions of people working at trying to be at the top.

Many people ask me, is it not too late to start affiliate marketing with so many people in the business?

My answer to that question is "No"!

“The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing.” - Walt Disney

You only need to choose your niche wisely.

I see many beginners that create product review sites like "Best Smart Phone Store", "Best Affiliate Marketing Tools", or "Treadmill Shop Express", and expect to get free traffic come to their site so they can send those visitors to Amazon and earn that awesome commission.

Well, unfortunately, those type of product review sites will fail if they plan their business to access free, organic traffic from search engines.

Some of those product review sites provide a horrible experience for the visitors.

I know I would much prefer to visit Amazon directly and read the reviews and specifications from there instead many of the product review sites I see some affiliate marketers create.

Now I'm not saying those sites cannot be successful but it will take a whole lot more time, work and probably money to get enough traffic on their sites to be successful.

Instead of having a niche site that only focuses on the product, affiliate marketers should focus on what people do with that product.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about.

Let's say we take the "Best Affiliate Marketing Tools" review site.

Rather than putting one review after another, write about the affiliate marketing business. You can write about how, where, who can start as an affiliate marketer. Look familiar? 😉

Then within your explanations on how affiliate marketing works or doesn't work, you can talk about what you or others you know have used as tools or platforms to get where you are now.

“User experience is everything. It always has been, but it’s undervalued and underinvested in. If you don’t know user-centered design, study it. Hire people who know it. Obsess over it. Live and breathe it. Get your whole company on board.”  Evan Williams, Co-Founder, Twitter

If your information is authentic and helpful most people won't mind taking a look at what you are recommending.

Heck, the readers will see that if what the affiliate marketers are using is working for them, they should give it a go as well.

That type of consistent approach will bring people to your site, it will build trust, they will find your content helpful, and they will engage in the topic.

There are many that don't use this approach and quit too soon so there is always room for those that do stay the long haul.

Who Has Done It

There are many success stories about affiliate marketers that are able to replace their job income with income from affiliate marketing.

I am a member of an online platform that provides training, web hosting, domain name registry, website builder, keyword research, live chat 24/7, webinars, two free websites, and so much more where we see success at various levels every day.

I am also affiliated with Rick and Jim that have great success with their online niche websites and they are an amazing resource. They have a program called Project 24.  That program is meant to take you through a step by step process to build your website from scratch to the point where you can replace your current job income within 24 months.

You can take a look for free at some amazing success stories I see every day on my membership platform here.

Do you think you have what it takes to be a successful affiliate marketer?

How You Can Get There

If you are ready for the challenge of becoming a successful affiliate marketing then there is no better time than now.

The fact that you read this blog post to this point is a good indicator that you may be ready to make this online venture a success.

As I mentioned above I recommended two separate platforms. I know that Rick and Jim provide great information and support but they don't have all the tools, level of training, and community support to the level that my current training platform provides.

The other difference is that Rick and Jim don't provide a free trial of their platform.

Whereas my current platform you sign up for free, no credit card information required, and if you realize after taking their free beginner's training that affiliate marketing is not for you then you can just walk away.

You don't have to worry about being billed later on for not canceling as they don't have any credit information on sign up. It's Risk-Free!

You can wait another day, another month, year, it's up to you.

Remember that every day you wait is another day further away you are from reaching your goal.

Conclusion

I hope that answers your question, on how long does affiliate marketing take to make money?

I feel that it is a matter of perspective, for some 6 months to a year is nothing where others will think it is an insane amount of time.

Today, so many people expect instant success when in reality creating a business can take years to be successful and there is no difference with an online business.

You have to put in the time and work now, without any reward for months to years before you can say you are having a successful business.

The cool thing about affiliate marketing is that it is something you can do part-time to start out and the cost is peanuts compared to starting a brick and mortar type business.

Hi Paul, this is the most honest piece I have seen about affiliate marketing. Many people are misguided about how long it takes to start reaping in profits on affiliate business. This is due to the fact that they only see results of established online marketers and not the long term hardworking invested by them. This post will help to correct their thinking and keep them prepared for the long successful journey ahead. Nice post

Dear Paul,

This is a million dollar question and to be honest being a full-time blogger people often ask me this question How Long Does Affiliate Marketing Take to earn money?

Thanks a lot for providing a helpful, practical and realistic answer. I got great insights from this post which I can share with my visitors. I got my first sale after 6 months and I learned that for any business we need to give at least one year of time.

The trust factor is very important! I do remember one awesome quote…

If people like you, they’ll listen to you, but if they trust you, they’ll do business with you – Zig Ziglar

As we will know content is the king and that’s the thing I am failing with and I need to create more quality content which will lead to engagement. Thanks for sharing this helpful information.

Much Success!

    Hey, Thanks, Paul!

I like that quote from Zig Ziglar.

It’s not easy at first but once you start getting a flow to creating content it does become easier. I still haven’t focused enough on social media or videos. I’ve been shying away from it like so many other people.

It’s the time that I too start getting social media and videos going.

Very insightful and well written. You made a valid point. Beginners in the blogging or online world don’t love to be patient enough. All their major expectations is quick success, start today and earn today, which is crystal clear it can’t work. Everyone starts somewhere, I am one of those victims of quitting platforms just so soon because I lack the patience to let things grow. From now I will work on my weakness. Thanks!

That is great to hear.  As I mentioned in another comment, we all have different weakness, strengths, and life paths that we take which makes us all unique. The thing to remember is to continue on that path and it will lead to your goal.

Timely post. I like sincerity. Many people expect too much good too soon and most times its really not their fault because some started upon the basis of the mouth watery advertisements they saw about affiliate marketing. Its a pity they did not know when to run to the hills. Personally, I have have seen some friends give up on it within the first 2 months. I think they should read this and learn about Trust Content and Engagement in conjunction with SEO and patients. Thanks

Hi Paul,

Thank you for this great article and it has answered the hottest question every marketer had in mind. I so agreed with you that it takes a significant amount of time to see your result.

When will you start making money is something that involves so many factors it is hard to give you an exact date or time to get to that point. It really depends on the effort you put in.There is no program that can promise you ethically a certain income or a time-frame if they do so they are not being truthful. There are some people that are action-takers. They will get all the things done quickly and take the advice to heart and move forward quickly.  These are the ones that start making money pretty fast. Others, like me, take a bit longer. It really depends on how you put the lessons and your work effort into play. I can tell you that there have been some members that start making a significant income after a few months, others it may take as long as a year.It all depends on you and the work you put in. Do a lot, make that work a planned time over just spending time on the platform chatting and socializing, and get approved for promoting products, and you can start making money fast.

Also, this is the first time, l hear about Income School’s  Project 24 and l will definitely check it out.

Thank you

A good honest answer to a popular question with affiliate marketer beginners. Every beginner should expect to work for 6 – 12 months, and sometimes longer before seeing ROI (return on investment). As you say, it is dependent on the niche you choose and how competitive it is. And other affiliate marketers will also say that making your first $1000 dollars is the hardest. Once you get some money trickling in, it becomes easier to increase the floodgates. I really like your breakdown of why affiliate marketing takes time. 1. Trust. 2. Content. 3. Engagement. It definitely takes time to earn trust and learn the skills you need to drive traffic to your affiliate marketing businesses.

    Paul - March 10, 2019

It helps to know the realistic expectations of success as an affiliate marketer.  That way you can set your goals such as the ROI you mentioned to be 6 to 12 months. If your ROI doesn’t happen at that point but very close (like 76%) then you may just need to readjust your goals. It’s not a reason to quit if your first year you haven’t made a 100% ROI. There are many longterm successful businesses that take years to get a 100% ROI.

Then there is the fact that so many starting out are taken aback with some fees they may have to pay to get their affiliate marketing online business up and running. SUre you can start free but that level of training is really only there to test you, to see if affiliate marketing is something you want to commit to.

Thanks a lot, Paul. You have opened my eyes. I was really wanting to know and asking myself how long can I expect success in this field of affiliate marketing. Many have told and showed me that it will take only a month or two that I can start earning $400++ after that. This seemed to be tempting, but not realistic. This piece of write up has given me a clear idea and I am not afraid. I have taken this seriously and I might succeed. Your article really inspired me, for it showed me the reality so that I can set my goals up.

Thanks a lot.

Hello Paul, this is an honest and most truthful review. I will be reading about affiliate marketing. Although I am not the type that believes in any get rich quick scheme or programs, I believed it always takes time, commitment and dedication. And thank God for this your truthful review about affiliate marketing that it will take nothing less 6 months to start seeing earnings properly. This may be a discouragement for some people but I must say it’s just the bitter truth and it will prepare them ahead to know what they are getting into so as to work towards achieving success.

Search engines have learned their lessons over that past years that taking their time to see if a true affiliate marketer starts a new website online they know that it takes time and will work at making their website helpful for their audience. It will weed out those that are not committed just by waiting 6 months or more before sending any traffic to their websites.

If you can’t wait that long for free traffic from search engines then you can look at increasing your social engagement and pay-per-clicks.

I will always remember these three keywords you used each time I have a little biased mind about my journey in affiliate marketing. Trust (time), content, and engagement will show search engines that you are not just giving this a try. If you can treat your affiliate marketing as a business with a plan to keep working on your website for 1, 2+ years then you will be considered a trustworthy website to be ranked well in SERPs.

Hello,

I have to start by saying that I am an affiliate marketer and a member of Wealthy Affiliate

I was browsing for affiliate programs and just happened across your article, I was intrigued by the title and had to check out the article to see what you were telling folks.

I am very impressed with your article as you are so truthful about the amount of time it really takes, and the explanation was even better.

I have been a member for going on five or six months now, I started my site from total scratch and chose a domain name that is more difficult to get traffic to my site than if I had used a niche related name.

But my site is getting traffic and I am gaining authority with Google, Bing, and Yahoo. This would have happened a little quicker if I had chosen a domain name more niche related I think.

You have a better explaination for me to why Google and the other two don’t send traffic to my site as much just yet. It made better sense to me the way you worded it.

I need to increase my content output for sure too. Thanks for the great advice in this article.

To become an affiliate marketer is simple…but to be successful at it is not easy. All it takes to consider yourself an affiliate marketer is to create a niche website, sign-up to affiliate programs, and add affiliate links to your website. All that can be done within an hour or a few minutes once you’ve done it before.

That is the simple part, the harder part is being successful at being an affiliate marketer. That is where you need to figure out how to get traffic to your website, ultimately you want free traffic.

That is where gaining trust (time), content, and engagement will help you become a successful affiliate marketer.

Hi Paul, that’s a good question and a one that is rarely asked about affiliated marketing, as I searched for work at home positions no one offered much insight on time. Sure all said you make money but the timing was never addressed, it all depends on how much work you put in, and your chosen niche. There’s no guarantee, it’s for sure not a get rich quick thing, after 8 years I am sure the volumes of information you have accumulated just on the fly are vast and changing as all tech moves forward. I just recently heard of project 24, never knew that’s how many months  the goal is, think I will go have a look, I am new to this market, but its fun to learn and see the way things work, I hope the door opens shortly, in the meantime its the price of an education, hope it pays enough to pay for itself , and an island or two….. thanks for the read and good luck in the future, t.c

Hahaha, yes an island or two would be nice too but I think most would be quite content with the outcome suggested by project 24 presented by Rick and Jim at Income School. Where they have a plan to help you start from nothing to having a profitable affiliate marketing website within 24 months that would replace your current job income.

That is a pretty sweet deal being able to be your own boss and still make the same amount of money as your full-time job was paying you.

Well, I have a question. Do I need to look for other opportunities to survive in the market, or, I should stick here and starve without earning a penny?

    Hi Radeet,

As with any business, there are sacrifices that need to be made at the beginning to reap the rewards later. The hardest part is that there is no guarantee that your first or second website will be successful. If you follow the training at Wealthy Affiliate or Income School you will have the best chance of making it but if you ever talk to them they will tell you about some of their early failures too.

If you are struggling at first and need to make some money online then you can try other ways to balance the cost of memberships. If you have some skills you can create an account on Fiverr and charge people to create some things like logos, graphic design, or training for example.

If you are good at blogging but can use more practice you can offer your writing services to blog platforms like HireWriters

The only thing with those type of services you will only get paid for the work you do. Your being paid for your time whereas affiliate marketing your not paid anything for your time at first but can be quite rewarding later on.

    Best Of Success Radeet
